Executive Summary

Stellar International Networks has partnered with the University of California Marshall School of Business to bring a delegation of 15+ women leaders in social enterprise, education and aerospace with 15 leading female business school students for a multigenerational women’s leadership mission to China to engage in discussion, exchange ideas and link women leaders of the United States with leading Chinese women; conduct corporate site visits to global corporations owned and led by women; highlight women’s achievements in largely male dominated sectors; discuss the significance of mentorship in the context of goal achievement and examine educational models growing, promoting and improving migrant student education. We will explore historical sites, learn more about the Chinese culture and examine the importance of mentorship to develop and further perpetuate the power of women’s leadership.

Our schedule in Beijing features a major program in collaboration with the United States Embassy and Carnegie Tsinghua University entitled:  “Mentoring Women to Soar to New Heights! “ This program will feature women leaders from the United States and China to highlight the impressive achievements of women pioneers in largely male-dominated sectors and discuss lessons learned from mentors who helped them achieve their dreams and goals in business, social enterprise, education and science and technology. Women leaders from various industries and disciplines will share real life stories, exchange ideas and discuss topics that inspire, inform and encourage women to reach for the stars. Our schedule in Shanghai features a U.S. and China Women’s Leadership Conference in partnership with the American Chamber of Commerce will feature a women’s business leadership conference featuring powerful women leaders from the U.S. and China. Other programs on our itinerary include meetings with foreign and Chinese business leaders to learn more about the successes and challenges of entrepreneurship for women in China and highlight examples of successful women giving back to their communities, including a visit to the Dandelion School in Beijing and Shokay in Shanghai.

The profile of our delegation includes an American astronaut with 5 space shuttle flights, Dr. Bonnie Dunbar; internationally renowned author, speaker and professor of sociology Dr. Pepper Schwartz; co-founder and chief executive officer of the largest independent advertising agency in the United States, Michele Fabrizi; a 40yr veteran visionary entrepreneur and former owner of the largest catering company in the United States, Rhona Silver; the largest importer and distributor of traditional Chinese medicines in the United States, Wina So; leading architect and designer of Hyatt and Shangri-la hotels, Betty Blount; and powerful women in education, real estate, investments, science and technology. Our delegation represents states from the east to the western areas of the United States and boasts 15 of the brightest female minds in business school at the University of Southern California. Our Stellar & USC delegates possess great and sincere interests in engaging, learning and developing new relationships with Chinese women in their respective fields and backgrounds.

Our mission goals summarized are as follows:
  • Linking women leaders across generations and cultures. 
  • Creating a network for new personal and professional relationships in US and China.
  • Examining the impact and promoting the importance of mentorship to help emerging leaders pursue and achieve their dreams and aspirations. 
  • Highlighting the achievements of women in business, social enterprise, education and aerospace. 
  •  Providing US and Chinese women leaders with a unique opportunity to engage in discussions and exchange ideas on business, mentorship, aerospace, education and social responsibility.
  • Supporting the work of the Dandelion School in providing education to migrant students.

The Stellar & USC Women’s Leadership China Delegation is led by Laurie McDonald Jonsson, Founder & President, Stellar International Networks and principal of Stellar Holdings in partnership with James Ellis, Dean, University of Southern California Marshall School of Business. The USC delegation leaders are Professor Julia Plotts, USC Delegation Leader, Assistant Professor of Clinical Finance & Business Economics; Jenny Jonsson, Student Delegate Leader, USC Business School Student and Guillermina Molina, Director of Undergraduate Programs, USC Marshall School of Business. Veronica Very, Executive Assistant to the President, Stellar International Networks is responsible for programming and Stellar Women delegate relations management. Mauree McKaen, President  & CEO, Leadership Unlimited and Joe Borich, President, Washington China Relations Council are project advisors.
